Bio

Benny Shaffer is an anthropologist, curator, and filmmaker who works at the intersection of experimental cinema, site-specific installation, and socially engaged art. As a curator and filmmaker he has exhibited projects at Harvard Art Museums, ICA Boston, UnionDocs, Mattress Factory, Art Institute of Chicago, and other institutions. His writings and translations have appeared in Art Asia Pacific, Art Review Asia, Flash Art, Journal of Chinese Cinemas, LEAP, Ran Dian, Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, and other publications. He holds a PhD in Social Anthropology and Critical Media Practice from Harvard University, where he was a Film Study Center fellow and a member of the Sensory Ethnography Lab. He served as the co-director of Revolutions Per Minute Festival in Boston and is currently a board member of Pittsburgh Sound + Image. He is based in Pittsburgh, PA.
